Things to See and Do

In and around Shipton Gorge

Situated as it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Shipton Gorge is an ideal base for exploring the rolling West Dorset countryside and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

What better place to start than the village itself, with its network of footpaths leading to quiet woods and meadows, stunning views of the coastline and leafy country lanes.   Make a point of visiting the early 15th Century St. Martin's Church, which is visible from almost everywhere in the village.   Why not round off your walk at The New Inn, where you are assured of a warm welcome from Marilyn Hewitt in a typical country pub.

Visitors are most welcome to join in the many events that take place in the village.

Further afield

West Dorset is full of so many attractions, too numerous to list in full on this page.

A few of the places worth visiting are the Hive Beach at nearby Burton Bradstock, the bustling harbour at West Bay, Abbotsbury Swannery, the Keep Military Museum in Dorchester, the market town of Bridport and historic Lyme Regis.   Visit West Dorset District Council's tourism web site for more information about the exciting things to do and see, whether you're here for the weekend or longer.
